Motion Picture Adaptations From Famous Children's Books

By Maurice K Harper

A lot of dearly loved kids movies were originally favorite family books. Lots of family books that have been around for a very long time have been made into films at diverse times in the past. Most of the films can stand on their own and nearly all of the books were previously classics. How faithfully do the films storylines follow the books?

In 2008, "The Spiderwick Chronicles" by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi was made into a movie. There are five books in the book series but only one picture has been finished so far. It follows the journey of a family of children who find a peculiar book in their new home that leads them into a world filled with trolls and goblins, elves, dwarves and other creatures.

A great family book that has been made into a duo of movies throughout the years is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. The book was first in print in 1964 and in 1971 the motion picture "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka came out. Another movie called "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" came out in 2005, with Johnny Depp playing the lead of Willy Wonka. Both films were quite accurate to the book.

In 1952, the author, E.B. White brought us one of the most beloved children's stories of all times with "Charlotte's Web". The book has remained in print continuously since its first publication. An cartoon motion picture of "Charlotte's Web" was released in 1973. In December 2006, a live action film version was released. Both movies followed the original story accurately.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved kids writers of all time. A few of his books have been made into wonderful films. "Horton Hears a Who" came out in 2008 with Jim Carrey as the voice of Horton. This is an animated feature film that follows the storyline of the book practically unerringly.

An alternative Seuss volume, "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" had an cartoon adaptation that came out in 1966. It followed the book virtually exactly. However, the big budget motion picture of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" from 2000 added many new scenes and events. The movie "The Cat In The Hat" which came out in 2003 also made many changes from the book.

Perhaps the most famous children's books that have been made into movies is the "Harry Potter" series. 6 of the 7 books have been made into movies with the only remaining volume in series intended to become two movies for a total of 8 films from the Harry Potter series. These movies are one of the highest grossing film series in history, exceeded by just the James Bond series.

Kids books frequently turn into movies that are fun for the whole family to view. Reading the books aloud to your children and viewing the films collectively is a remarkable family activity, where celebrated reminiscences can be made.
