Controlling the Auction House in WoW boils down to a simple formula (one that can actually be applied to most markets outside of the game as well, but thats a bit off topic) that can be replicated across practically any in-game market you choose to enter. The steps are as follows:
1. Choose your niche and pick out the most profitable item available within that niche. This will vary from server to server, so you should probably take some time to observe how your niche functions to avoid wasting your time and gold. This is something that you will get better at with time, as you could fill a book with the criteria for judging this.
2. Once you've located your item, get together enough gold to buy it out and to lock any competitors out of that niche by buying them out.
3. Relist your item at an inflated price in relatively small quantities to create the illusion of scarcity.
4. Collect the gold from your inbox.
If you've been smart about choosing your niche, then you're pretty much done at this point. If you had to start things off small, you can start to scale it up by either expanding your niche or going into another one, depending on which is more profitable, and you can keep on scaling up until the next step is to buy a new account just so you can have more gold mules.
If youre not doing this 7 days a week, I would strongly suggest listing items for 48 hours starting on Saturday morning, and buying on Sunday evening when most of the weekenders have put up their items at reduced weekday prices, although this pattern may vary depending on your server.
